“An URL” and not “a URL”
Do you say “an URL” or “a URL”? If you search online, most recommendations are for “a URL”. I hope to convince you that “an URL” is legit and better.
First. It depends how you say URL. If you pronounce it ‘you arrr ell’, then yes ‘a URL’ is correct. But the other way to say it is ‘earl’. Then ‘a earl’ just sounds clumsy in English. Correct is ‘an URL’, like ‘an earl resigned from the House of Lords’. So both ways to say URL are ok. There is no rule that says if you have a set initials (like URL), that you have to say each letter separately. An example is UNESCO.
Second. URL said as ‘you arrr ell’ is 3 syllables, while ‘earl’ is one. The latter is 3 times shorter. Look, the reason we say URL (either way) is to avoid saying Universal Resource Locator. Much shorter. The same reason can be applied to decide how to say URL, giving us ‘earl’.
